Area Guide Greenwich

Greenwich is a place of historical significance in the south east of London, known for the National Maritime Museum and Greenwich Mean Time. Established initially as a Saxon village, with fishing boats tied to its banks and livestock roaming the streets, Greenwich became a place of significance via the observatory through which international Meridian was constructed.

Across the river from Canary Wharf, but offering lower rents, office and light industrial space is being developed exponentially to accommodate growing business in the area. With focus being predominantly in the IT, communications and artistic sectors, and with the redevelopment of huge brownfield sites, the cultural quarter on the Royal Arsenal and the World Heritage Site in West Greenwich, it is becoming an ever-increasingly popular place to set up business.

Setting up your business here

With offices of less than 100 sq ft to large warehouses at 200,000 sq ft, there is a range of flexible space for businesses to rent in Greenwich. Places such as the Digital Enterprise Centre at Mitre Passage provide office space and meeting rooms for digital businesses wishing to locate on the Digital Peninsula, London's newest business district.

The development of Greenwich Millennium village just south of the O2 has also had an impact on business, offering the opportunity for new technologies to improve the urban environment and houses a primary school, GP surgery and shops.

Culture and Entertainment

Once a village disconnected from the hustle and bustle of London, Greenwich has maintained that feel despite its remarkable transport connections to the city centre. With lots to see and do, among favourites are a visit to the National Maritime Museum and the restored Cutty Sark, a tea clipper that once transported tea from China. The Trinity Hospital, established in 1671, is the oldest surviving building in the town centre and now a residential area for sheltered and retirement housing, with impressive architecture.

Greenwich Market has become famous for its unique arts and crafts stalls and independent designer sales. Books and antiques are bought and sold to the sound of local musicians and a continental food court provides a pit stop for lunch.

Eating out

Greenwich combines high quality London dining with the ambience of a countryside town. The Greenwich Tavern is an old pub looking out over Greenwich Park, and is made up of a main bar area and two private function rooms. The food takes British cuisine and fuses it with contemporary European flair.

Going further down a similar route, The Hill serves Mediterranean food with a Latin-American twist. There is also an attractive patio garden for sun-kissed dining.

Conducive to a mid-meeting snack, the Plumtree Cafť serves home-baked cakes and pastries and for a friendly ambience, Goddardís at Greenwich is the family-run pie and mash shop.
