Parktown is a large suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Known as one of the parks, it is the first suburb north of the inner-city. Parktown neighbours Hillbrow, Berea, Houghton, Forest Town, and Westcliff. It is divided by Jan Smuts Avenue into Parktown and Parktown West which is almost entirely residential.
The suburb of Parktown offers a mixture of quiet residential areas, businesses, hospitals, churches, and restaurants. In addition, it accommodates three of the five campuses of the University of the Witwatersrand. There are several schools in the suburb, such as Parktown Boys’ High School, Deutsche Schule Johannesburg, Holy Family College, and Parktown Public School. Hospital and clinics in the suburb include: Brenthurst Clinic, Donald Gordon Medical Centre, Johannesburg General Hospital, Milpark Hospital, and Parklane Clinic. Parktown is famous for its mansions, including the Villa Arcadia, Bishopskop, Dolobran, North Lodge, and Northwards. There are many opportunities for office space in Parktown.
Entertainment And Dining Out
Parktown has a lot to offer in terms of sights and activities. It is home to the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company, the Johannesburg Children’s Theatre, the Johannesburg Freemasons’ Hall, the Parktown mansions which are famous for their unique architecture, the South African Ballet Theatre, and the South African Youth Ballet. Parktown has a variety of restaurants offering diverse cuisine options including the popular Italian restaurant La Cucina di Ciro and steak at The Local Grill, along with many others.
Getting to the suburb is quite easy, as it located from O.R. Tambo International Airport. It offers international flights (i.e. from London, Paris and Frankfurt) and domestic flights. Getting downtown from the airport is possible by rail (Gautrain, a rapid suburban rail network) and by taxi (metered). Johannesburg is built for car and the public transportation system is still being developed, however Parktown has Metrobus service.
